From Framing Houses to Fireworks—Meet One of Our Super Supers
If you’ve ever wondered what grit, heart, and a little bit of pyrotechnic flair look like in human form, meet one of our standout Superintendents at Caritas. With nearly five years on the team and a career that spans decades, he’s the kind of person who builds more than just buildings—he builds trust, mentorship, and a whole lot of team spirit.
Born and raised in West Chester, PA, his path to construction wasn’t paved with textbooks or tidy plans. After navigating a childhood shaped by change and a bit of rebellion, someone suggested he try the trades. Turns out, that advice was life-changing. He enrolled in a vocational program for carpentry and cabinet making in high school, and the rest is history—framed, nailed, and leveled.
His first job out of school had him framing houses, where he quickly discovered the satisfaction of seeing a project come together. That hands-on experience laid the foundation for a career that would eventually shift into commercial construction, opening up new challenges and opportunities.
From carpenter to working foreman to superintendent, his journey has been marked by hard work and a willingness to learn. The biggest turning point? Making the leap into commercial construction and leading his first ground-up project. Since then, he’s honed not just technical skills, but the art of managing people, contractors, and ever-evolving tech tools.
He’s also a mentor to younger supers, sharing his experience and wisdom with the Caritas-Rendell team.
This marks his fifth year with Caritas, and he’ll be the first to tell you: it’s the people that make it special. After reconnecting with longtime colleague Dan McCall, he joined the team and quickly found himself immersed in a culture of unity and appreciation. “Work is still work,” he says, “but it’s a whole lot better when you feel valued.”
His partnership with Zach Tauber, Project Manager, is a prime example of what collaboration looks like when strengths are balanced and egos are checked at the door. Together, they get things done—and have a little fun along the way. Zach says, “I am honored to have worked with Dave for over 3 years. Dave’s attention to detail, team-oriented attitude, and ability to get the job done – can only be rivaled by his humility.”
One standout project for Dave since working with the firm is The Temple Hospital Gamma Knife. A complex, high-stakes build tied to cancer treatment, it pushed his skills and underscored the importance of precision and purpose. “It was unlike anything I’d ever worked on,” he shares. “Knowing it would help so many people made it all so rewarding”.
When he’s not mentoring or managing builds, you might find him on the Chesapeake Bay, building furniture for his grandkids, or designing fireworks displays that rival the pros. (Betsy calls it an obsession—he calls it a passion.) Every Fourth of July, New Year’s, and any other excuse he can find, he lights up the sky with custom shows that bring joy to everyone around him.
He has a strong Christian faith and commitment to serve others, having participated in mission trips across the country and abroad—from post-Katrina relief in New Orleans, supporting students at the Frederick Douglass School in Chester and rebuilding a church in El Salvador.
At the end of a long day, his favorite ritual is simple: cheese, crackers, a choice beverage, and catching up with Betsy, his wife and best friend of 40 years. Together, they’ve raised two children and are now proud grandparents to four lucky little ones.
With retirement on the horizon, he plans on spending time with his family and traveling with Betsy to see the Grand Canyon and other National parks out West. But until then, he’s all in—building, mentoring, and making Caritas and Rendell stronger every day.
